Yarrow was given the Latin name Achillea in honor of the legendary Greek hero Achilles. According to common lore, Achilles’ mother dipped him into the river Styx by the ankle in an effort to render him invulnerable. Fighting many battles as a seemingly invincible warrior, he employed yarrow to treat the wounds of his fellow soldiers. Achilles later died from a wound to his heel, the one unprotected aspect of his anatomy.

Yarrow has been used for centuries in traditional medicine and is regarded as a harmonizing and balancing herb. It has a variety of medicinal properties, including:

  • Anti-inflammatory

  • Anti-catarrhal (removes excess mucous from the body)

  • Antimicrobial

  • Anti-spasmodic (relaxes muscles in the uterus and digestive tract)

  • Diaphoretic (reduces fever)

  • Digestive herb

  • Eases cold and flu symptoms

  • Lowers blood pressure

  • Stimulates blood flow in the pelvic area (especially uterus)

  • Hemostatic (stops bleeding)*

Yarrow is a classic first-aid herb and can be used to stop bleeding both internally and externally. As a wound healer and hemostatic, yarrow's main use is for treating wounds, lacerations, bruises, and bleeding.

On an energetic level, yarrow encourages healthy boundaries between people and offers valuable protection for times of travel, work meetings, inner work, or simply navigating daily life.

To use: Adults, take 1 dropperful 2-3 times daily. For external use, apply the tincture to wounds, lacerations, cuts, and bruises to stop bleeding and disinfect.
